Wednesday July 22, 2009

Today was another day full of hard work and accomplishment.

Our demo team finished clearing the site we have been working on, including some tough concrete and a stubborn railroad tie. Paula, the woman who owns the property, expressed her gratitude and offered us a delicious salad and watermelon. We also had the chance to meet some of Paula's grandchildren whom also helping with the demo work. They are all very nice and were also very thankful for the work we did. We are glad to have had a chance to help this family's journey towards getting a new home. We finished this job early and had a chance to visit a few sites that we might be working at later on before coming home early to rest.

The flooring team also successfully completed the master bedrooms of the home we have been working at. Our team, highly experienced after the first two bedrooms, moved rapidly despite today being much more humid than it has been lately and were able to come home earlier than the past two days. We were treated to some extraordinarily delicious "home-style Southern cooking" at lunch. Brian, a really cool guy who owns the home we were working in, cooked up hamburgers, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, and secret-recipe barbeque chicken. Our group thouroughly (and messily) enjoyed it. When we had finished the flooring and baseboards and were heading home, Brian reiterated how words could not express his gratitude and told us we should be proud of our work as youth.
It has been great to be able to get to get to know the unique individuals that we helped and brought hope to. These connections make our servise much more than just tasks that need to bet done.

We have alos been exploring the idea of love, in particular as it relates to the passage in 1 Corinthians 13. We are trying to explore how we can challenge ourselves to see and experience God's love during our time here and hope that we can strive to "walk just as he walked" (1 John 2:6).
